New electric Porsche SUV will arrive in 2021 with potentially 700bhp in Turbo S guise, and distinct bodystyle from standard car

Porsche’s SUV boss has confirmed more details of the next-generation, all-electric Macan, first revealed by Autocar in October 2018.

The new model will feature an entirely different bodystyle from the existing Macan to reflect its status as a reinvented model for the brand.

Speaking to Autocar at the recent Frankfurt motor show, Porsche’s director of SUVs, Julian Baumann, confirmed that the existing, internal combustion-engined Macan will remain on sale alongside the new Macan during a transitional phase. The offering will broadly mirror that offered by the Taycan/Panamera duo.

“Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character,” comments Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG. “By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimised petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars. Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”

Det betyder att nästan majoriteten av kompakta SUV-segmentet är elbilar. – Tesla, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, PSA group med DS och Renault etc. satsar på elektriska fordon 2020- och framgent.

Hur många delar av de ingredienserna får nog Porsche själva förklara, och det kan ligga viss bäring i det? Redan 1975 introducerades modellen, typ 930, som blev ikonisk med sin relativt enkla form med en uppseendeväckande vinge, stor som en ”terass” baktill.

Modellens breddade skärmar och låga profil gjorde också att det var något ”sensuellt” över formerna. Den blev snart populär i media där den kunde dyka upp i diverse filmer och ibland i så skilda ämnen som annonser för cigaretter och semesterorter.

Speaking of performance, Porsche says the Taycan will have about 600 horsepower and be able to sprint to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. There is no official word on whether the 4S enjoys a performance advantage over the base car or if the Turbo version has more power than the 4S. The 0–100 time is scintillating performance by most standards, but the Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode will trounce the Taycan at the drag strip unless the Porsche option spices up the Turbo trim somehow.
